bit of used fabric or fluff to create a
head. Close with a rubber band at the •
neck. Decorate with markers and insert
Popsicle sticks for the body. Now, on
with the show!
• Try shaping your favorite cookie
recipe into the Purim figures. Add
food coloring to dough to make
these extra fancy.
• Old magazines area great resource
for young children. Provide boys and
girls with a single piece of cardboard,
onto which you have drawn the outline
of a body (these should be fairly large,
for decorating purposes). Make one for
each person in the Purim story. Ask chil-
dren to cut out pieces of faces, clothing,
etc., from an old magazine and glue
onto the figure. Encourage them to use
their imaginations and cut an eye from
one picture, another from a different
picture. Add tongue depressors to the
back.
• Make the Purim characters a very
personal matter by using your child's
thumbprint for a face. Simply place her
thumb on an inkpad (yes, it will get
, but it will wash out eventually —
and this is fun!), then press on to plain,
white paper. This is the head. Decorate
by adding a face, hair and body. Cut
out, and attach a Popsicle
stick for your one-of-a-kind
puppet.
• Use a flashlight and a
blank wall to create hand
shadows to tell the story of
Purim. There are a number
of good books on how to
make hand shadows, but
chances are your child will
have good ideas on
his own.
• Use a perma-
nent marker (be
careful, of course
— these really are
permanent) to
draw the faces of
Haman, Esther
and Mordechai on fruits or vegetables.
#5) Ring Around The Napkin:
With white construction paper, you
can make great napkin rings for your
holiday table. Just design the character,
and be sure to leave large tags at the bot-
tom to be affixed at the back. Let dry,
then slip over napkins. Another idea for
your table: make holiday coasters.
Construction paper works well for this
craft, but remember to use permanent
markers because otherwise moisture
from the drinks will ruin the design.

#6) It's In The Cards:
Make silly table decorations, or cards
to include with
your mishloach manot, by using
WhiteOut on your favorite cartoons.
Just cover up the dialogue (and wait
patiently, because it will take a good
five minutes for it to really dry) and
write in your own "Happy Purim"
message with a black marker.
#7) Knock, Knock!
Here's a decoration to make for
your home or table, or to use as a
card to send to a friend. All you
need is two blank pieces of paper,
crayons, scissors and glue. First, cut
out a few "doors" and "windows" in
one sheet of paper. Simply draw a
square, and cut out three sides.
When you have made a number of
these, glue this piece of paper atop
the second sheet, making
certain that the doors and
windows are NOT glued
down. When this is dry,
lift each "door" and draw
a Purim greeting, or one
of the Purim characters,
underneath. On each
door write "hello" or
make a doorknob, then
have fun lifting each to
see who or what is
behind.
#8) Who Am I?
You will need:
Paper, pens, and
tape. Here's a
Jewish version of a
popular party game that children
and adults will enjoy.
Begin by writing down as many
Purim words as you can. Next, cut
these out. Then turn them over so
that the words are not visible and
have each player select one, which
another player tapes to the back of
his shirt. The player then may ask
five yes-or-no questions of others as
he tries to guess the word he has
selected.
#9) Challah Topper:
You will need: A plain, white
cloth, such as a handkerchief, mark-
ers in various colors (NOT perma-
