Newman met then-State Sen. John
Engler. Later, as governor, Engler
made state money available to the
midfield project with "no strings
attached," Newman said. Engler
appointed Newman to the Michigan
Strategic Fund, where she served for
four years, and then to the board of
Oakland University in Rochester Hills.
"In the years I've known Andrea
Newman, she has proven to be an
effective advocate for whatever cause
she is involved with, " Gov. Engler
said. "She's clearly been an asset to
Northwest Airlines during the con-
struction of the midfield. terminal."

Jewish Networking

Through Max Fisher, Newman also
met local Jewish com-
munity activists, such
as real estate developers
Spencer Partrich and
Mickey Shapiro and
Eugene Applebaum,
founder of the former
Arbor drugstore chain.
Eugene
"Andrea Newman
Applebaum
represents the best of
the next generation of
leaders," said Applebaum.
"Beyond her impressive leadership
skills, what stands out about Andi is
her generosity of time, energy and
heart for her community. Andi has the
ability to manage a hundred complex
tasks at the same time and she can
complete each one flawlessly and on
schedule."
Newman is the daughter of Philip
and Myrna Fischer of Bloomfield
Hills. Active at Temple Beth El, she
was president of the youth group, and
was confirmed there. She graduated
from Birmingham Seaholm High
School.
Her Jewish involvement decreased in
college, with very little at U-M (she
graduated in 1979) and at George
Washington University National Law
Center.
Newman's interest in Judaism has
rekindled and she recently returned
from a Bible study trip to Israel.
"When I went to work in the White
House," she said, "I didn't think of
myself as being Jewish and working in
the White House, I just thought of
myself as working in the White
House. There were not a lot of Jewish
Republican activists there at the same
time."
For Jewish Republican men, she
said, the big question was always,
"How do you meet a nice Jewish girl
in Republican politics?"
