Bar/Bat Mitzvah

David Elan Devries celebrated his
bar mitzvah on Saturday, Feb. 9, at
Adat Shalom Synagogue. He is the
son of Jeffrey Devries and the late
Sheri Devries and
brother of Danny
and Rachel. Proud
grandparents are
Helen and Robert
Devries and
Barbara and Larry
Traison.
David is an
honor student at
Hillel Day School
of Metropolitan Detroit in
Farmington Hills. He enjoys sports,
computers, Nintendo, drawing car-
toons and going to Camp Maas in
Ortonville. Mitzvah projects includ-
ed participating in Adat Shalom's
Housing the Homeless initiative and
Hillel's JARC Program. David will
be donating a portion of his bar
mitzvah presents to establish a
Jewish National Fund garden in
memory of his mother and will plant
trees there during an upcoming fam-
ily summer trip to Israel.

Aaron Kahn will be called to the
Torah as a bar mitzvah on Saturday,
Feb. 1 6, at Congregation Beth
Shalom. His proud parents are
Marcie and Jack
Kahn and his
older sister is
Ilene. Betty
Singerman is his
ecstatic grand-
mother.
Aaron is a sev-
enth-grader at
Norup Middle
School in Oak
Park. His interests include sports
and computers; his passion is chess.
He is the highest rated 1 2-year-old
chess player in Michigan and he
recently tied for third place among
all seventh-graders in the Scholastic
National Championship
Tournament. For his mitzvah proj-
ect, Aaron visited the Coville
Apartments in Southfield and helped
the senior citizens.

Allison Brooke Manchel, daughter
of Karen and James Manchel and sis-
ter of Brett, will become a bat mitz-
vah Friday, Feb. 15, at Temple Israel.
She is the grandchild of Pearl and
Frank Manchel
and Phyllis
Cheiman; great-
grandmother is
Gertrude Levine.
Allison is also the
grandchild of the
late Fred
Cheiman.
Attending
Orchard Lake
Middle School in West Bloomfield,
where she is an honor student,
Allison enjoys playing the guitar,
writing and working on the comput-
er. One of her mitzvah projects was
volunteering in Federation's Mitzvah
Day.
