committed to the process. I think it's so
important that there is a Conservative
day school for the city of Detroit."
Will the school's $1,000 tuition increase
turn away prospective Hillel families?
"I think the school, its administra-
tive department and its marketing
department will have to work harder
to convince people that this kind of
increase is an anomaly, and that Hillel
is dedicated to its future," he said.

A committee made up largely of Hillel
parents founded the JAMD, which
opened its doors in August 2000.
At that time, a year's tuition was
$10,000, and the school offered every
student a tuition subsidy of $2,000,
although numerous families declined
the subsidy. This year, the school's sec-
ond, tuition has risen to $11,500,
with a $2,500 tuition subsidy. For the
2002-2003 school year, families will
be asked to pay $12,500, and there
will be no tuition subsidy.
Without the subsidy, some families
will find the increase is actually $3,500.
Returning students who pay a $500
deposit by Feb. 15 will cut their
tuition by $500, and new students
who pay the deposit by March 15 will
receive the same discount.
"Thus far, we've heard very little in
the way of objections," said Rabbi Lee
Buckman, head of school for the
JAMD. -"Parents know what they are
getting as far as quality."
In the school's two-year history, no
one who has applied for financial aid
has been disappointed, he said.
According to Robert P. Roth, JAMD
president, 22 percent of this year's stu-
dents are receiving tuition assistance.
"I think the board truly understands
how big a financial commitment this
is on a family," said Rabbi Buckman.

educating a student in grades 9-12 is
