Orthodox Rabbis Presidium and is
chairman of Project Achim, which pro-
vides cultural and religious assistance to
immigrants from the former Soviet
Union.
Rabbi Goldberg describes Young Israel
of Southfield as a-mixture of "all age
groups, of different backgrounds, and a
lot of kids who are delicious.
"We're like a family," he says. "Of
course, there has been disagreeing,
debating, confronting. Still, I'll walk
away feeling a great deal of warmth and
acceptance."
During his 18 years as rabbi, he has
especially enjoyed seeing "a greater
awareness of, and appreciation for,
Talmud Torah and the growth of indi-
vidual families."
What will Rabbi Goldberg miss most?
"Children's simchahs — Seeing a child's
birth, then his or her bar or bat mitzvah,
then the wedding. Nothing is sweeter
for a rav (rabbi) than to be part of all
that," he says.
"The shul has been extremely sup-
portive of my decision to leave," he
adds. "I just don't think I can successful-
ly do both jobs."

Friends And Congregants

"He has been a wonderful teacher and a
wonderful friend, a mentor for me and
for my family," says Dr. Daniel Gotlib,
president of Young Israel of Southfield.

But Dr. Gotlib isn't really saying good-
bye.
"I've come to understand what a rebbe
really is, and it has nothing to do with
beginning and closing contracts or with
being a hired employee," he says. "It's a
relationship you have with someone you
trust spiritually. And once you've con-
nected with someone — no matter
where he is — that will last a lifetime."
Sixteen years ago, Dr. Gotlib moved
with his family from Flint to Southfield.
They visited many congregations before
deciding on Young Israel of Southfield.
After joining, Dr. Gotlib would meet
weekly with Rabbi Goldberg "and he
would answer all my questions — about
God, about life, about my family, about
anything. He taught me the truth.
"He very gently guided me to where I
needed to be, where I wanted to be."
Young Israel of Southfield's member-
ship comprises many professionals —
from scholars to lawyers — and they
wouldn't settle for anything less than a
scholarly rabbi, Dr. Gotlib says. At the
same time, Rabbi Goldberg has an excel-
lent understanding of the secular world.
"He can relate to anyone," Dr. Gotlib
says.
Mark Schlussel, who has worked with
the rabbi on Kids Kicking Cancer, has
known him as a friend and congregant
since the rabbi came to Michigan.
