The letter from Judy Levin Cantor
("Twain Not Guest At Detroit House,"
Jan, 25, page 6) prompted me to write.
As a piano student, I was one of the
regular Thursday-night ushers at
Detroit's Orchestra Hall; many patrons
were in formal attire. After a perform-
ance, some of us would go backstage for
an autograph from the artist.
Pianist Ossip Gabrilowitsch was very
gracious. In fact, I had an autographed
picture that he gave me, but in the
course of the years, it got lost.
One special moment of those times:
Paderewski, the pianist, shook my hand!
I had gone backstage and stood frozen.
He turned, saw me, came over and
shook my hand.
The only performer who never gave
an autograph was Rachmaninoff He
was tall and very intimidating. We
knew to keep our distance.

DeRoy Foundation
Provided Funding

On behalf of the Federation's Alliance
for Jewish Education, we want to
express our gratitude on the recent cov-
erage you gave our Artists in the
Schools program ("Art," Style at the
Jewish News, Feb. 1, page 6). We were
thrilled to see the article and photos
highlighting one of our programs that
took place at the Congregation Shaarey
Zedek religious school with artists Gail
Rosenbloom Kaplan and Dani Katsir.
We must acknowledge, however, that
the Artists in Schools program is made
possible by a generous grant from the
DeRoy Testamentary Foundation. This
program would not exist without their
unwavering financial support.
We are thankful for your recognition
of our programs. You inspire us to con-
tinue to find innovative ways to teach
about Judaism in our community's
afternoon religious schools.

Rabin Wrongly
Blamed For Capture

The letter by Hymie Cutler, director
of the Committee for a Safe Israel
("Atalena's Sinking Proved A

Disaster," Feb. 8, page 7) is factually
incorrect in its attempts to blame
Yitzhak Rabin for the capture of the
Old City of Jerusalem by the Arab
LegiOn in 1948.
The letter implies that the Irgun
ship Atalena, with its cargo of arms
and ammunition, was sunk by forces
under Rabin's command, thereby
depriving the Irgun of the arms neces-
sary for the Irgun's defense of the Old
City of Jerusalem.
The State of Israel came into being
on May 14, 1948; the Jewish quarter
of the Old City of Jerusalem fell to
forces of the Arab Legion command-
ed by the British General Sir John
Glubb on May 20, 1948. The Atalena
did not arrive on the Israel coast until
June 20, 1948, one month after the
Jewish quarter surrendered.
On May 26, 1948, Israel's provi-
sional government issued Order No.
4, which provided a legal framework
for the military forces of the new state
under the name of Zvah Haganah
Leisrael (Zahal, or in English, Israel
Defense Forces). No private armies
were allowed and all soldiers were
required to take an oath of allegiance
to the state, its laws and authorized
government.
Some Irgun members complied
while others formed their own Israel
Defense Forces (IDF) battalions with
their own officers. Others, including
those involved with the Atalena,
refused Order No. 4, landed Irgun
troops on the coast and proceeded to
Tel Aviv to attempt to unload the
store of weapons.
Rabin, then a Palmach officer, was
ordered by the government to oppose
the landing by force, if necessary. A
firelight ensued, resulting in the sink-
ing of the ship and the death of 14

As a lover of writing, I can only
imagine the sense of loss you must
be feeling. Yet,I also knew that this
tragedy would not end the, greatness
of the Jewish News.

This past week, we were witness to

Menachem Begin and the Irgun com-
mand then disbanded the military
arm of Irgun.
The IDF has remained under civil-

Shulman Projects
Not 'Pork Barrel'

.

As a 22-year resident of the 39th State
House District, and more important-
ly, a voter, I was very surprised by
some of the comments made by
Democrat Stuart Brickner concerning
the voting record and accomplish-
ments of my representative,
Republican Marc Shulman ("State
House Battle," Jan. 18, page 15).
Mr. Brickner feels that the bulk of
the things done to better this commu-
nity are "pork barrel" projects. Is a
personally funded office on Orchard
Lake Road to hear constituents pork
barrel? Is achieving state tax deduc-
tions for Holocaust survivors pork
barrel? Is obtaining a $200,000 grant
for a traveling Holocaust museum
pork barrel?
In my opinion, none of these
accomplishments should be consid-
ered "pork barrel" legislation. These
are projects that are important to the
entire 39th District, as well as our
large Jewish population. It concerns
me that Mr. Brickner does not see
them in that light.
