roadhouse style ... and many of the
evening specials that change each day.
Monday stalwarts like the home-
made deli-style meatloaf, topped with
grilled onions, green peppers and a
mushroom gravy ... or the coconut
shrimp served with an orange horse-
radish sauce made at Peabody's.
Wednesdays with its tasty short ribs
in natural gravy, etc. ... On any given
day, dinner at Peabody's may present
lamb shank roasted together with its
vegetables ... lobster tail, roast duck,
roast turkey, rosemary chicken breast,
etc. ... A big seller is the applejack
baby ribs at Peabody's ... juicy and
tender ... with an applejack barbecue
sauce made in house.
And you can't beat the Roquefort
chopped sirloin that Peabody's has
served since the beginning.
Fish has always been heavily request-
ed at Peabody's ... but not like it is
today.
Everyday features of broiled fresh
whitefish and broiled fresh salmon are
regular called-for standards.
Specials include fresh lake perch,
fresh pickerel, mahi-mahi, broiled
scrod, fresh lake trout, orange roughy,
etc.
With so many folks on health and
dietary kicks, eating salads has become
the thing for many ... And this 26-
year-old family dining institution has
kept step with changing of the times
... with a bevy of salad selections from
which to choose ... There is never a
lack of good wholesome salads ... and
even the daily specials include them in
their list of entrees.
When a fire in January 1980 closed
Peabody's for six months, people cried
... They thought their Peabody's would
remain closed ... But the spirit of Jim
and his daughters was such that could
not be dampened ... Seating was for
about 125 when a fire was caused
from the faulty oil-burning furnace
that existed from the market days.
Luckily, Peabody's was closed when
fire leveled the restaurant.
Undaunted, Jim and his daughters
got hold of the same builder who had
built the restaurant five years before,
Richard Christie, and it was rebuilt
with much the same decor as before.
Peabody's exquisite rustic look was
retained ... with its cow-looking and gra-
cious barn wood, stone walls downstairs,
and seating for 274 on its two floors.
One of the looks upstairs is of recent
vintage ... Until last November, the
walls were completely solid ... Three
large and two smaller windows have
been added ... and daytime customers
who remember Peabody's from way back
