I can't see myself living through four
weeks of worry while she is on the trip."
Rabbi Herbert Yoskowitz of Adat
Shalom Synagogue spoke to the 33 teens
and' many of their parents at the kickoff
meeting to the 2002 Teen Mission to
Israel. "Visiting Israel and seeing your
other home is a precious gift," he said at
the Jan. 27 get-together at the Max M.
Fisher Federation Building in
Bloomfield Township.
The evening began with an Israeli din-
ner that included falafel and halavah.
Guests then asked questions about the
trip.
It was the first of four pre-trip educa-
tional sessions; the other three are sched-
uled for Feb. 28, April 21 and May 19.
Teens will learn about Israel's history,
geography and way of life. Hebrew slang
words will be taught to help in speaking
to the new friends the teens will make.
Organizers promise the trip will be
every bit as exciting and educational as
the previous four, held every other year
since 1996, yet a closer-knit experience.
"The 33 registered teens will have the

opportunity to get to know each other
very well," said Temple Israel Vice
President Rob Gordon, co-chair for the
Teen Mission.
In addition to the Michigan teens vis-
iting Israel this summer, Israeli teens
from Detroit Jewry's partner region in
the central Galilee will come here March
19-25, the week before Pesach, for mil:
gash (encounter or meeting) week to
learn about Judaism in the United
States.
"I look forward to learning about
Israel and hope I will have fun," said
Warren resident Jessie Christensen,
16, of Temple Emanu-El. "I have
wanted to go for a while. It will be a
good experience, although I am a lit-
tle nervous. I know the organizers of
the trip will not let anything bad
happen to us."
Ben Chudnow, 16, of West
Bloomfield, will be visiting Israel for
the third time. "When I went to Israel
eight years ago," the Congregation
Shaarey Tzedek member said, "they
were having the same problems. It is
