Furstenberg, of Pulte Homes ... "I
read your column on Excalibur and
your mention of Rascal House. I had
heard that rumor as well and, being a
huge fan of Rascal House, contacted
the owners directly. They confirmed
that, unfortunately, they have no
plans of opening a restaurant in
Detroit.
"Have you heard anything about
the Cheesecake Factory opening a
place here? I have chatted with them
over the past couple of years and the
restaurant critic at the Free Press tells •
me she has also heard that they are
looking for a location here.
Cheesecake Factory told me 'no com-
ment.'"

ward each week to read your column
on line, and we enjoy it so much. We
keep searching for a mention of Carl's
Chop House on Grand River that was
our favorite. The maitre d' was a
friend of ours, and we lost touch after
leaving Detroit."

OLDIE BUT GOODIE Dept ... In
a conservative synagogue, its president
was a good businessman but, Jewishly,
he was ritually challenged.
On a Sabbath holiday, the gabbai
(sexton) offered him an aliyah.
Panicked, he said, "No, no, no. I can't
read the Hebrew blessings. I'll embar-
rass myself."
The gabbai said, "You HAVE to
take some honor, you're the presi-
dent!"
"Isn't there anything where I don't
have to talk?" asked the president.
The gabbai thought for a minute
and suggested, "How about gelilah?"
"What's gelilah?" said the president.
"Simple," replied the gabbai, "You
just come up after the Torah is lifted
and when the cover is put on, you put
on the breastplate and the crown and
then sit down."
Relieved, the president accepted the
honor. And so, right after the hagbah
(lifting) the president came up, put
on the breastplate and the crown and
went back to his seat.
The gabbai came running over and
said, "On the TORAH! On the
TORAH!"
