in cooperation with Congregation Shir Tikvah presents the Midwestern premiere of RAISING THE SPARKS Artist-Of-Residence Jennifer Rosenfeld's time in Israel inspires art exhibit currently on display in Pontiac. SUZANNE CHESSLER Special to the Jewish News A rtist,in-residence was Jennifer Rosenfeld's title as she worked in Israel for a year, but a more apt desig- nation might have been artist-of-resi- dence. Rosenfeld's 25 paintings from that time address habitat issues and feature abstract representations of her responses to dwellings. The paintings, oils on canvas or wood panels, come together through "Housing," her current solo exhibit running through Feb. 19 at the Creative Arts Center in Pontiac. In March and April, the same works will be featured at the Synagogue for the Arts in New York. "I've been a cityscape painter straight through," says Rosenfeld, 29, who works out of an improvised studio in her Birmingham apartment. "I like places that are affected by people, and I think about the imprint people make and the history of what is represented." Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002 • 7:30 p.m. Jewish Community Center • D. The presence of intense shades and tones demonstrates how her response to structure was influenced by the chang- ing effects of natural light — whether brightening or dimming — during her assignment in the Middle East. "I was accustomed to painting urban gray, but my time in Israel for the Arad Arts Project (October 1999 June 2000) changed my color palette," says the artist. When Rosenfeld started tracking Israeli architecture to use as the subject of her work, she thought about con- trasts. There were the early buildings, completed quickly with cement blocks to take care of immediate needs, and there were the later buildings, made more individualized and complex to add drama to what might have been an uninterrupted desert. The contradiction of the beauty of ancient cultures and traditions versus modern pragmatism in design became the metaphor for my work," says Rosenfeld, who had visited Israel in earlier years. "Like modern life in Israel, a land and nation embroiled in struggle while its citizens strive to maintain a level of normalcy in lifestyle, I have wrestled with the pursuit of beauty in a con- stricted environment. -
