"George and Ira had one of the
most special and extraordinarily close
writing relationships, and my hope is
that as many people as possible get to
hear their music."
Conducting the Detroit concerts
that will celebrate Valentine's Day will
be Erich Kunzel, DSO Pops music
adviser since 1988 and music director
of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra for
more than 30 years.
He will be joined by prize-winning
pianist Michael Chertock, a touring
symphony soloist and recording artist
who will play Rhapsody in Blue and
other Gershwin piano compositions.
Presenting romantic songs from
Porgy and Bess will be soprano Roberta
Laws, who has taken the role of Bess
for the Houston Grand Opera and the
Den Norske Opera in Oslo.
Appearing with her will be baritone
Daniel Washington, who has been cast
in a full production of the folk opera
by the Deutsche Opera and also has
sung in concert versions with the
Berlin Philharmonic, Dallas
Symphony Orchestra and the
Kenwood Festival in London.
In 1934, the year that Porgy and Bess
debuted, George Gershwin performed
at Orchestra Hall with the Reisman
Symphony Orchestra led by Charles
Previn, cousin of Andre Previn. Fellow
pianist composer Sergei Rachmaninoff,
a frequent guest on the Orchestra Hall
stage, was in the audience.
Gershwin's last Detroit engagement
came in 1937 — less than a year before
his death from a brain tumor at age 38 —
when he appeared with the DSO before a
capacity crowd at Orchestra Hall.
The crowd attending the upcoming
Valentine's Day-Gershwin celebration
programs also will hear variations on
"I Got Rhythm" and selections from

An American in Paris.
"I think the Gershwin music tran-
scends generations and I loved it long
before I met Adam at UCLA
(University of California at Los
Angeles)," says Amy Gershwin, a
Cranbrook graduate who has been affil-
iated with Temple Beth El and Temple
Shir Shalom. "It's extraordinary that the
music shows such diversity."
The young Gershwins, who were
married in 1995 at the Ritz Carlton in
Dearborn and chose the Gershwin
favorite "Our Love Is Here to Stay" as
the background music for their walk
into the reception, are following a .
show business family tradition.
Although not music collaborators,
they have become a screenwriting
team. The couple, who have two pre-
school-age children, work on original

scripts at their Los Angeles home and
have done some assigned writing for
DreamWorks and 20th Century Fox.
While Adam takes on a variety of
licensing responsibilities for the trust,
Amy is a staff writer for the primetime
version of The Weakest Link.
"I like game shows and learn some-
thing new every day," says Amy, the
daughter of Susan and Michael
Salesin, still in the Detroit area.
Amy and Adam Gershwin, both 30,
have set up a writing routine for their
work together. First, they iron out
story lines and assign scenes for each
to do independently. Later, they edit
each other's work.
Their debut script was loosely based
on their honeymoon, and they look
forward to a time when they can see a
full production of theirs on the screen.
"Although we won't be at the
Detroit concert, we do get to the area
often," says Adam, whose mother,
Andrea Gordon Gershwin, grew up in
Michigan. "I have some very happy
early memories of visiting Detroit to
see my mother's side of the family."
Working on the Gershwin trust gives
Adam Gershwin a lot of insight into his
great-uncles' legacy and how it's affect-
ing new generations of music fans.
"What's been really great is that a lot
of contemporary artists are recording
their work," he says.
