At Shir Shalom
The Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit and the Jewish Community
Council will present an evening with
Martin Indyk, U.S. ambassador to Israel,
7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at Temple
Shir Shalom. This event is part of
Detroit's Israel Solidarity Initiative to
raise the community's
awareness to key
issues and events
affecting Israel.
Indyk has spent
the last decade build-
ing bridges to peace
between Israel and its
Arab neighbors. Over
the past nine years, he Martin Indyk
has been an active participant in all the
Middle Eastern events that have grabbed
the world's attention. As the first, and
second, Jewish U.S. ambassador to the
State of Israel, he worked with five Israeli
prime ministers (Rabin, Peres,
Netanyahu, Barak and Sharon). He is a
senior fellow at the Brookings
Institution in Washington, D.C., where
he works on Middle Fast policy.
Registration is required by Thursday,
Feb. 28, for this free event. Space is lim-
ited; gifts will not be solicited.

TOV (Tikkun Olam Volunteers), the
Detroit Jewish Coalition for Literacy
and the Women's Campaign and
Education Department of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit,
invite women in the community to
share their love of books by reading to
children 8:45-11 a.m. Friday, March 1.
Participants will meet at the Max. M.
Fisher Federation Building in
Bloomfield Township for breakfast,
before departing for the designated
schools, where volunteers will read to
groups of children. All volunteers are
asked to please bring a new or gently
used book to donate to the school.
Judith S. Rubin and Arlene Selik are
the co-chairs for the TOV event, and
Barbara Horowitz is the associate chair.
Paula Glazier is the president of
Federation's Women's Department, and
Annie Cohen is the vice president in
charge of the planning for this day.
Reservations are required by Monday
Feb. 25. There is no cost.
