San Francisco Symphony Residency

A weekend of concerts and educational events

Presenting two exclusive programs, performed

only in Ann Arbor and at Carnegie Hall.

Arafat's inscription to him.
After the Arafat meeting, Charney
reported back to Ezer Weizman,
Chaim Bar-Lev, Shimon Peres and
Yitzhak Rabin. Rabin was the most
dismissive of the meeting.
"Rabin says to me, 'Nothing will
ever happen with him; he doesn't rep-
resent the real Palestinians.' And six
years later, I'm going to the White
House lawn. Rabin is reluctantly shak-
ing his hand. Then Arafat visits Leah
Rabin when she's sitting shivah."
He pauses and continues, "So if you
don't go crazy in this peace business ...”

conductor and an American

When Charney got married in 1991, •
the two witnesses to sign his ketubah
(marriage contract) were Ezer
Weizman and Yitzhak Rabin.
His 31st-floor office is filled with
memorabilia of his high-level contacts: A
photograph
behind his desk
shows Weizman
and Clinton
both reaching
out to shake
Charney's hand.
There are also
photographs of
Henry
Kissinger and
Jimmy Carter
along with hon-
orary doctorates
from the
University of
Indianapolis, Dowling College in
Oakdale, N.Y., and Haifa University.
Charney wears cufflinks with large
numerals "7," given to him by the admi
ral of the U.S. Seventh Fleet, whom he
met when the show was recording from
Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
From his office with its wide view of
the Hudson River, he points toward
Bayonne, N.J., where he grew up.
Charney attended Yeshiva University
and Brooklyn Law School, and he now
lives on the West Side of Manhattan
with his wife and 2-year-old twin sons.
Before this interview, he was at the
Garment Center synagogue, where
Charney, also a former cantor, led serv-
ices on the day of his father's yahrtzeit.
Charney wanted to end his new
book on an upbeat note, and spent
weeks trying to figure out how to do
that. In an afterword, he writes:
"One must never forget that the Holy
Land is a place of miracles. And it has
been said that in order to live in the
Middle East, one must believe that mir-
acles are reality" srl
