The Purple Rose cast of Guys on Ice —
Tom Whalen, Paul Hopper and Joseph
Albright — reprise their roles at the
Gem. Theatre beginning Feb. 7.

Alley showed samples of plays he had
written to Kaplan. Soon, they were
collaborating.
By 1994, Kaplan had quit his retail
job and moved to Wisconsin to work
with Alley at the theater near Green
Bay. Although most of his labors were
behind the scenes, he did play the
accordion for an Alley production
about Jewish and Irish immigrants
moving through Ellis Island.
"Fred had done a lot of research at
Ellis Island but named most of the
Jewish characters after members of my
family," recalls the composer, whose
settling in a beach area has limited his
opportunity for Jewish observance. "I
gave him the Hebrew names of my rel-
atives.
"Within the next year, the theater
offered me a job managing the compa-
ny. They had never had a manager
before. We've had a tremendous
amount of success, and this past year,

Kaplan wrote 15 songs for Guys
on Ice, including "The One That
Got Away," which is about fish
and women; "The King," which
offers an Elvis Presley moment;
and "Ode to a Snowmobile Suit,"
which adds to the comedy.
Marketing is a big part of Kaplan's
future as he sells his completed works
to new venues, the AFT to new audi-
ences and perhaps himself to new writ-
ing partners.
His greatest joy came on the day that
otherwise would have been his saddest.
Kaplan's daughter, Sarah, was born just
a few hours before Alley died.
"Sarah is 8 months old now, and she
likes music," Kaplan says proudly. "I
love watching her legs move to whatev-
er beat is playing, but I especially love it
when its my music or my playing." ri
