impact — I'm not that naive or self- centered — but I do get through once in a while ... Sometimes, I see the light click on." — Robert A. Sklar Hillel Boosts Tuition il illel Day School of Metropolitan Detroit has made several budget changes, including a 9 percent tuition increase, to help off- set a reduction in available funding. On Jan. 27, the Farmington Hills- based school's parents learned by mail • of several new measures designed to balance the budget while maintaining the school's educational standards. Most importantly, tuition for the 2002- 2003 school year was raised to $9,900, from this year's annual rate of $9,100. If the payment is made by July 15, 2002, a $200 discount will be given. Another cost of a Hillel education is the "Give/Get." This is the amount a family must either contribute or bring in as purchase of scrip, tickets for the annual dinner, journal ads or the like. For the first time in three years, the amount has been raised to $550 per family from $450. Tier grants and tuition assistance will be maintained, and the school will begin a sibling discount program. A committee will be set up to begin efforts for a capital campaign. — Diana Lieberman Federation Cutbacks e Jewish Federation of etropolitan Detroit, the com- 7 m unal overseer for Detroit Jewry, has announced a 5 percent reduction of its staff in the wake of budget concerns. "This year, the Federation thought it necessary to lead the way in budget con- trol to assure that there are as many dol- lars as possible to serve local needs — given the economy and overseas needs related to the situation in Israel," said Mark Davidoff, Federation chief operat- ing officer and. executive director. Most of the reductions will come from not filling about five or six vacant positions and one layoff in the planning department, he said. "The duties will be absorbed by other positions as we con- tinue to find better and more creative methods to do what we need to serve the community." The current year's operating budget is $3.52 million. — Harry Kirsbaum Inside Orchard Mall • Orchard Lake Road, North of Maple • (248) 626-0886 A Atm DAVID ROSENMAN'S mom IPIIIIKHASE11/11 NEW & USED CAR BROKER Sales • Leasing • Buying (248) 851-CARS (248) 851-2277 2/1- 2002 27
