Katie Hess, 10, of Farmington Hills chats with JVSs Zipora Golenberg, also of Farmington Hills. ed to various charitable organizations to encourage parents to incorporate the concept of tzedakah into their children's b'nai mitzvah celebrations. At the Jewish Family Service booth, Ben Fallen from Birmingham enjoyed making a magnetic card with emergency phone numbers for use by senior citi- zens. "But I'm giving my tzedakah dollars to JARC, [a social service agency] because they help my sister," he said. A highlight of the program was the "Penny Harvest," which began several weeks ago when students from local Jewish religious schools were given can- vas sacks to be filled with "stray" pennies from family members, friends and neighbors. Tables overflowed with sacks of pen- nies, checks and other monetary dona- tions as students delivered their "har- vests" to be counted and then donated to the various community organizations represented at the Tzedakah Experience. At the end of the morning, the students decided how the money should be allo- cated. Now in its ninth year, students have collected more than $50,000 during the past eight Penny Harvests. Katie Hess of Farmington Hills, a Temple Israel student, said her tzedakah dollars would probably go to Yad Ezra and JVS, a career development agency. She was impressed with her experience at the JVS exhibit, where she performed the task of filling a plastic bag with candy and then taping it:shut "=- using her opposite hand. "It helps to understand what it's like for someone with a disability," she said. Cydney Seigerman, a Temple Beth El student from West Bloomfield, decided to allocate her dollars to the ADL "because they help Jewish people who get discriminated against." "The effort put into this program is tremendous," said Cydney's father, Chuck Seigerman. "These truly are pen- nies from heaven." Other sponsors of Tzedakah Experience 2002 were Temple Beth El, the Jewish Educators Council, the Detroit Jewish News and Bank One Michigan. ❑ Call Leslye at Fenby-Stein Entertainment Agency (248) 474-9966 PPS "...an outstanding evening of music and entertainment!" - Rick & Karen Fink HAIRS Offiti z= $100 PER TRUMP For any.
