Melton Milestone

If using your brain keeps you young,
then Florence Melton will live the
proverbial 120 years
and remain
vigorous and active throughout.
In December, the educator, inventor,
activist, philanthropist, artist and
sculptor celebrated her 90th birthday.
Best known as the pioneer behind the
Hebrew University of Jerusalem's
Florence Melton Adult Mini-School,

—

Melton also applied her creative gifts
to industry. One of her inventions,
dating from 1946, revolutionized the
footwear industry with the use of
foam in shoe design.
Melton was honored Dec. 16 at a
black-tie gala sponsored by the
American Friends of Hebrew
University and held at the Boca Club,

in Boca Raton, Fla. Melton lives in
Boca Raton and Columbus, Ohio.
'After 90 years of active engagement in
this game of life," Melton said, "I know
that everything changes and I believe
that all change is part of the big plan.
"Hope is what Judaism is all about
... We are here to make the world a
better place, and we had no assurance
that it would be easy."

The Melton school has helped revo-
lutionize adult Jewish education with
its organized, text-based approach,
said Aviva Panush, associate director of
the Agency for Jewish Education of
Metropolitan Detroit and one of three
co-directors of the local Melton mini-
school. Recent studies have shown that
mini-school participants enthusiasti-
cally attend classes in Judaica, and
bring that same enthusiasm home to
their families and communities.
"We have six full classes of adults
who are learning intensely on a weekly
basis," Panush said. "The energy is
really palpable."
