Talk's Theme —
Dead Sea Scrolls

Under the auspices of the Cohn-
Haddow Center for Judaic Studies at
Wayne State
University, Professor
Michael Stone of
Hebrew University
will give a presenta-
tion titled "Scholars
and the Dead Sea
Scrolls: New
Discoveries and
New Insights" 2 p.m. Michael Stone
Sunday, Feb. 3, at
Wayne State's Oakland Center, 33737
W. 12 Mile Road, Farmington Hills.
Stone was responsible for editing
eight of the manuscripts that form
the 30-volume set of the official edi-
tion of the Dead Sea Scrolls,
Discoveries in the Judean Desert. On
Monday, Feb. 4, at 8 p.m. at the
AGBU Manoogian School, 22001
Northwestern Highway, Southfield,
Stone will present a second lecture
titled "Stones from the River: The
Lost Jews of Armenia."
Both lectures, co-sponsored by the
Armenian Research Center at the
University of Michigan-Dearborn in
cooperation with the AGBU Alex and
Marie Manoogian School and St.
John's Armenian Church, are free and
open to the public. For information,

Temple Beth El
Hosts Scholar

Dr. Michael Cook will be the scholar
in residence for Temple Beth El's
60th annual Rabbi B. Benedict and
Ada S. Glazer Institute on Judaism
for the Christian,
Eastern Orthodox,
Muslim and
Protestant Clergy
on Friday, Feb. 8.
This is the first
time the institute
will host a returning
scholar. Dr.Cook,
last year's speaker,
Dr. Cook
was invited to
return and explore
Judeo-Christian relations.
Dr. Cook is the Sol and Arlene
Bronstein Professor of Judeo-
Christian studies at the Hebrew
Union College-Jewish Institute of
Religion, Cincinnati.
Dr. Cook will address participants

Friday, Feb. 8, at 9:30 a.m. on
"Sibling Rivalries in Genesis and in
Christian Art: Their Profound
Impact on Interfaith Relations." He
will divide his lecture and slide pres-
entation into two sub-topics, speak-
ing first on "The Message of Sibling
Rivalry in Medieval Church Art" and
then at 10:45 a.m. on "The
Elaboration of Sibling Symbolism by
Renaissance Art."
Phyllis and Irvine Kaplan, who
chaired the 2001 institute, are
returning as chairs of this year's
event.
Dr. Cook will speak at Shabbat
services Friday at 7:30 p.m., address-
ing the congregation on
"Armageddon and the Jews:
Terrorism and World Turmoil in
Evangelical Scenarios." On Saturday
at 9:15 a.m. Torah study, he will use
talmudic passages to explore "Jesus in
Our Talmud: What Our Ancient
Rabbis Believed and Why It Still
Matters." He will conclude by speak-
ing at 10:30 a.m. Shabbat services on
"Excluding Laypersons from
Interfaith Dialogue: Why It's Done
and What Is Done."
The community may attend both
the Friday morning programs,
Shabbat services Friday and Saturday
and Saturday morning Torah study.
No reservations are necessary; there is
no charge.
