homemade french fries that made the
fast-food chain variety look even more
pathetic ... Boy, did people love their
broiled club steak a la Bernardi with
sauteed onions, green peppers and
fresh mushrooms ... and on Friday, the
delicious Boston Clam Chowder.
On Woodward in Birmingham, P.J.
Clarke's was owned by television favorite
Dr. Sonya Friedman and Joan
Wittenberg, former owner of Healthy
Jones ... It offered restaurant-goers a
small setting with seating only about 60.
But it looked deceptively spacious
due to the architectural features ...
Long wooden beams crisscrossed
beneath the ceiling, adding dimension
to the dining area and giving it a chic,
roughly "unfinished" look ... Hanging
plants added a touch of coziness with-
out crowding your dinner ... There
was a small patio on which you could
dine in nice weather.
The food was so colorful and beau-
tifully garnished that you wanted to
gaze at it before digging in.
In an interior that Mexican restau-
rant fanciers learned to tolerate, if not
to love, was Acapulco on East
Jefferson in Detroit ... It was small and
bedecked with pinatas ... serving
authentic Michigan Mexican food ...
and, it was said, the best margaritas in
town ... A fine place for a comfy,
burn-your-tongue Mexican meal.
A Thai restaurant, boutique and
grocery was all rolled into one to give
area diners plenty of alternatives for a
complete dining experience ... The
dining room at Siamese Twins on
Opdyke in Bloomfield Township, was
off to the side of the grocery-boutique
and divided into small areas to let
patrons feel that humble intimacy
Siamese Twins was known for ... It was
a favorite of all the "food experts" in
the area ... and its authenticity kept
bringing them back.
KORN KORNER ... The candidate
called his wife and said, "Congratulate
me. I've just won the election."
"Honestly, dear?" she said.
"Now, why would you want to
bring that up?" he grumbled.
OLDIE BUT GOODIE ... The
main course at the big civic dinner
was baked ham with glazed potatoes.
Rabbi Cohen regretfully shook his
head when the platter was passed to
him.
"When," said Father Kelly playfully,
are you going to forget that silly rule of
yours and eat ham like the rest of us?"
Without skipping a beat, Rabbi
Cohen replied, "At your wedding
reception, Father Kelly.
