It ran for five years. I also did a Wiseguy movie." When he worked on The Equalizer, Surnow was able to sneak a little Judaism into one of the episodes. "I had the Equalizer meet a guy in a synagogue," he laughs, "in a beautiful old Orthodox syn- agogue in New York," where the show was filmed. "That was my little Jewish contribution to the series." While there won't be any Jewish con- tributions on 24, Surnow is pleased that Fox has agreed to air the whole 24-hour cycle, airing each episode four nights a week through May. "But we aren't thrilled with our pres- ent Tuesday night time slot," he says. "We are opposite Frasier and NYPD Blue, two shows with very strong follow- ings. Fans of those shows would be good candidates for ours — they are people who like good, smart adult television." Still, Surnow and the cast and crew need not spend too much time worrying. Not only has 24 received critical acclaim, it was recently nominated for two Golden Globe Awards — one for Best Dramatic Television Series and one for Keifer Sutherland for Best Performance by an Actor in a Dramatic Television Series. "They told us about the possibility of the Golden Globes nomination ear- lier, but I forgot and it came out of nowhere," Surnow says. "For us it means more exposure for the show. "I remember when The Practice won some Emmys and Ally McBeal won a Golden Globe, it really did help them get better ratings. That's the bottom line that we are looking for. As Surnow continues to work on this year's scripts, he's also waiting to learn if 24 will be picked up for another season. That information should come in May. 'Although we don't know yet if there will be a next season, we have lots of ideas roaming around in our heads," he says. "If we do come back, we know there will be another 24-hour crisis. We want to keep the show fresh and exciting. "What we don't want to do is rehash season No. 1, and do the same thing all over again." ri 33 Each episode of 24 debuts 9 p.m. Tuesdays on Fox and is repeated 9 p.m. Friday on Fox, 11 p.m. Sunday on FX and 10 p.m. Monday on FX.
