painting of his daughter's response to
King's assassination.
King's comments about social jus-
tice, joined by comments on the same
theme by other Americans, appear
throughout the exhibit to give histori-
cal perspective to the visual depictions.
The namesake catalogue that accom-
panies the exhibit showcases additional
artistry relevant to the theme as well as
scholarly essays. The supplemental
pieces will not be in Detroit because
they are either in another exhibit or
have become too fragile for display.
While the exhibit is in Detroit, .there
will be special events associated with
the nonviolent protest King espoused.
There will be workshops for children
and films for people of all ages on Jan.
21. A commemorative march and rally
is planned for June 23.
After leaving Detroit, the exhibit
will travel to museums in Miami,
Minneapolis, Brooklyn, Memphis and
Montgomery, Ala.
"From among the innumerable exhi-
bitions SITES has issued over the
years, "In the Spirit" is one of the
most important," says Anna Cohn,
SITES director. "It speaks profoundly
to the lasting impact of Dr. King's
influence, transcending both time and
medium to honor his voice through
great artistry.
"At this moment, when the dual
challenges of courage and sacrifice are
at the forefront of the American expe-
rience, we are especially gratified to
share 'In the Spirit' with the public."
Curator Steven Kasher, also Jewish,
knew the cousin of Andrew
Goodman, who was killed for his par-
ticipation in the civil rights movement
in the South. Norman Rockwell's
painting Murder in Mississippi imag-
ines the moment of death.
"In Judaism, we have a belief that
everybody is responsible for everyone
else, and this exhibit gives an opportu-
nity to think about following those
ideals," Kasher says. 111
