I just get pumped up and step up to the challenge," says Drutz, who has won numerous professional awards, including several local Emmys for programs on health and education. She and her staff answer about 100 phone calls daily from viewers, usually complaining about syndicated and network programs but mixed with some praise and suggestions. Criticism has been lobbed at the for- tiler Ellen (DeGeneres) show, for sexu- al innuendoes; NYPD Blue, for vio- lence; and even the recent showing of the film Saving Private Ryan, for offen- sive language. One of Drutz's toughest program- ming decisions was removing the much-hyped Dr. Laura (Schlessinger) TV program from the air shortly after its debut in 2000, and restoring Martha Stewart to the 10 a.m. time slot. Drutz often is quoted in local news- papers defending her decisions and TV in general. Popular Colleague "Marla's so upbeat, she can make unpleas- ant news sound pleasant," says Fred Marx, partner in Marx Layne & Co., a Farmington Hills public relations agency. "She was a survivor before the TV Survivor show became popular. She's the Energizer Bunny and the Pied Piper. She leads everyone and never allows things to fall apart. If anything, she over-commits and tries to take on too much." As if she doesn't have enough to do at Channel 7, Drutz also serves as director of programming and special projects for the Scripps-Howard Broadcasting Co.'s channels in Baltimore, Kansas City and West Palm Beach, Fla. She often travels to those cities to assist the outlets in the pur- chase of syndicated programs. In her spare time, Drutz, a member of the Michigan chapter of the International Women's Forum, men- tors young college women and Channel 7 interns in their studies and career choices. "Marla is responsible for launching my daughter, Julie, on her career as an assignment editor at the E! Entertainment channel in Los Angeles," Marx adds. "Marla is a real firecracker," says Don Shane of West Bloomfield, Channel 7's chief sportscaster, who's worked at WXYZ with Drutz since 1989, particu- larly on his sports specials. "She lights up the room; there's never a dull moment with her around. "Not only is she a good friend of mine, but she's a real pro on the job, someone with competence and savvy who delivers high quality in every- thing she does and extracts quality work from everyone around her."
