Yael Well Talks About Purim

The former rebbetzin of Young Israel of
Oak Park, Yael Weil, will speak as part of
the Uniquely Ours series of programs for
women 9:30 a.m.
Sunday, Feb. 10. Her
Machon
L'Torah/Jewish
Learning Network of
Michigan talk is titled
"A Pre-Purim Journey
from Belief to Faith to
Joy"
The talk by Weil,
wife of Rabbi Stephen
Yael Weil
Weil, formerly of Oak
Park and now of Los
Angeles, is dedicated to the memory of
the late Arthur Schussler.
"My grandfather grew up on the
Lower East Side [of New York City],
the son of Polish immigrants," said
Schussler's granddaughter, Lynne
Schreiber, a Young Israel of Oak Park
congregant and friend of the Weils.
Schreiber and her husband, Avy, are
sponsoring the Machon event.
"Judaism was incredibly important to
Grandpa Artie," she said. "In his last .
days, he reminded the entire family to

believe in God."
Once, Schreiber's parents and
grandparents joined her for a Friday
night meal at the Weil home. As the
Weils' five children presented energetic
stories, her grandfather became nostal-
gic for the rituals of childhood.
"Judaism, at its core, is about recover-
ing our roots and staying connected with
the generations," said Bayla Jacobovitz,
director of women's programming at
Machon. "The Torah is our guiding
force. It's what makes us a people."
This program combines issues of
faith with a passion for learning — a
characteristic that was important to
Arthur Schussler, who studied with
Rabbi Shmuel Irons, rosh kollel of the
Kollel Institute of Greater Detroit for
20 years, said Jacobovitz.
Weil will connect these ideas with
the upcoming holiday of Purim,
which represents the dedication and
determination of Jews, despite oppres-
sion and attempt at annihilation.
The continental breakfast is open to
all women; reservations are required.
There is a fee. For information, call
(248) 967-0888.
