Heartfelt Thanks

hank you, world!
Beverly Goldberg wants
to thank her En club,
including all those she does-
n't even know.
The cards, the letters, visits and
prayers have overwhelmed the
Southfield resident and her family.
Goldberg, who will be 59 on Sunday,
Jan. 20, nearly lost her life last month
after she became septic
following surgery. The
medication that saved
her life forced the
amputation of most of
her toes, and she's
learning to walk again
while recovering at a
Farmington Hills reha-
ALAN
bilitation facility.
HITSKY
Goldberg is a mem-
ber of the support staff
Associate
at Jewish Family
Editor
Service in Southfield.
Her co-workers donat-
ed 300 hours from individual sick-banks
to help her financially until long-term
disability kicks in.
"She's worked at JFS for 11 years,"
said Goldberg's daughter, Alyssa Tobias
of West Bloomfield, "and JFS has never
done this before."
Linda Bibbs, JFS financial resource
department case manager, continues to
rally the workers with daily e-mail
updates on Goldberg's condition. Bibbs
credits Sheryl Stoddard, the JFS human
resource director, with the sick-bank
idea. The donation amounted to more
than $3,500 being sent to the
Goldbergs.
"I'm so amazed by my agency
Goldberg said. "I just couldn't believe
what they did."
JFS' Bibbs believes it. "I first met Bev
10 years ago when I came up here from

GRAPIJEWZ

Texas. I'm not Jewish, and I wouldn't
have made it without her. She answered
every question. She's my friend."
Goldberg has friends in other places,
too. She also works part-time for her
son-in-law, Dr. Robert Singer, in
Southfield. The doctor's receptionist has
her church praying for Goldberg, and
the clergy at Temple Israel have been vis-
iting her 2-3 times per week.
Goldberg's daughter, Alyssa, quotes
Rabbi Harold Loss in calling her mother
"a miracle. The doctors don't know how
she made it, but the support of the
community has been absolutely over-
whelming."
Goldberg's mother, two sisters and
brother are constantly by her side,
Tobias said, as are Goldberg's husband,
Howard, and daughters Amy Singer of
West Bloomfield and Stacey Byck of
Southfield.
Someone even put Goldberg's plight
on the Internet and she has received get-
well messages from as far away as
Malaysia. She started using a walker last
week, and vows to walk out of the
rehabilitation center.
"I have to be really happy" she said.[1
