Palestinians. Rather, the military is for
defense against nations like Iran, Iraq
and Syria, which have repeatedly
threatened Israel, said Gad-Harf.
Beydoun said numbers don't mat-
ter, one suicide bomber can be just as
deadly.
On leadership differences, Gad-
Harf said Israel has an established
government with checks and bal-
ances, while the Palestinians have fac-
tions working against each other, try-
ing to topple the more moderate fac-
tions.
Beydoun said, "It's been very diffi-
cult for the Palestinians to build a
government in the past 15 months
when the Israelis have been attacking

those very institutions that allow the
Palestinians to form a government."
According to Beydoun, Camp
David was done at a "hurried pace."
People talk about 94 percent given
back to the Palestinians, but when
you figure the complex equation out,
it comes to 72 percent, he said. And
refugees' rights were not addressed.
Gad-Harf said his perception was
much different.
Former President Bill Clinton
brought the parties together the sum-
mer before, and whatever amount of
land was offered, it would have led to
a Palestinian state that today would
have celebrated its first anniversary,
Gad-Harf said.
"Israel and the Jewish people accept-
ed a sliver of land as part of their par-
tition agreement in 1947. That was
not what they wanted. But they
understood that they would accept,
and want to have, at least a foothold
that would represent a homeland for
their people, even if it wasn't every-
thing they wanted," he said.
"I think it would be great if the
Palestinian leadership would assume
the same attitude."
