Southfield hosted its first Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Walk Celebration in 1986, one of the first in metropolitan Detroit. "The day is designed to foster com- munity involvement in all walks of life and to honor Dr. King and keep toe dream alive," said Michael Manion, the city's community relations manag- er. "This year we're saying, 'It's not a clay off, but a day on. "' The city's annual MLK Jr. Peace Walk will depart at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, from Hope United Methodist Church, 26275 Northwestern Highway. The walk's destination is the Southfield Civic Center Pavilion, where the program will continue at 11:30 a.m. Temple Emanu-El Cantor Norman Rose of Southfield will lead the singing of "The Star Spangled Banner." At the pavilion, winners of the 2002 MLK Jr. Essay Contest will be announced. This year's topic, open to third- through 12th-graders, is: "If Dr. King were alive today, what would he think about racial profiling?" Winners will be invited to read their essays. Southfield will temporarily rename Civic Center Drive between Evergreen and Lahser roads Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.-The name will remain throughout February, which is Black History Month. The Farmington/Farmington Hills Multicultural/Multiracial Community Council will host a candlelight walk at 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, from the Costick Activities Center, 28600 11 . Mile, to Nardin Park United Methodist Church. Participants will light a unity candle and pay tribute to Dr. King and others who have devoted their lives to peace.
