r. Martin Luther King Jr.
would have turned 73 this
month. His birthday,
observed this year on
Monday, Jan. 21, will be commemo-
rated in a variety of ways in the
Detroit area.
In West Bloomfield, the "United We
Walk" program, in its eighth year, has
scheduled more weekend events than
ever before. This year's theme is "I
Carry the Dream." The celebration
begins at West Bloomfield High
School, 7 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 20, with
a candlelight vigil, reading, reflection
and song.
"The program is a great unifier for
the community," said Margie Fiszman-
Kirsch, West Bloomfield Township
deputy supervisor. "It furthers Dr.
King's cause by supporting our com-
munity's diversity and helping us
appreciate different perspectives."
West Bloomfield's commemoration
continues at 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21,
following a complimentary breakfast.

Keynote speakers will be Fox 2's Huel
Perkins and U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, D-
Mich. Speakers and performers will
include several children's choirs. One
group of children from six West
Bloomfield elementary schools will sing
an anthem by school district parent
David Mayer, a professional musician
and composer. The anthem was record-
ed by a group of Scotch Elementary
School students late in 2001.
The traditional 1.5-mile walk along
Orchard Lake Road, which begins at
10:15 a.m., will be followed by a compli-
mentary lunch. Afternoon events include
the one-man show, "You Don't Know
Me Until You Know Me," written and
performed by Dr. Michael Fowlin of
New Jersey. The play deals with race, dis-
crimination, violence prevention and
personal identity, and is sponsored by
B'nai B'rith Great Lakes Region's
"Enlightened America" program.
Dialogue sessions for elementary;
middle and high school students will
take place in the afternoon. Adults
who participated in a yearlong
"Information, Interaction and
Understanding" program also will
hold a dialogue session.
Adult dialogue organizers plan to
