A Still, Small Voice

he ability to speak is a
marvelous one. So why
do we find so many
annoyances connected
with speech?
Have you ever been to see a movie
and been annoyed by the folks
behind who will not stop talking? I
SY
even remember a couple who read
MANELLO aloud the notice on the screen that
Editorial
silence is appreciated — and then
Assistant
they proceeded to have a discussion
about it, resolving that they would
never be guilty of such a thing.
It may be disconcerting to be with a small child
who blurts our something that we deem embarrass-
ing. Stop to consider that this is, usually, an inno-
cent remark — an innocent observation of the way
things truly seem to the young observer. The remark
was not made to ridicule someone or make him feel
bad. Get home, and have that discussion about feel-
ings and things not to say.
Have you ever heard of a stage whisper? It origi-
nally was one that an actor would use to convey a

secret" on stage, but
voiced so that the
audience would be
able to hear it.
Anyone who uses
the technique off
stage is either obliv-
ious of how silly
his actions are or he is deliberately being
annoying.
I mean, why stand over someone and
"whisper" so loudly that everyone can hear
anyway? Or is that the desired goal?
Finally, please don't leave a voice-mail mes-
sage and speak as rapidly as possible, espe-
Eu
cially when leaving a phone number. Do you
want your call returned? Then why_make
one of the most essential pieces of informa-
tion so unintelligible that it is missed. I had
one message that I had to listen to at least
three times to try to decipher what number to call.
Always keep in mind Hamlet's advice to the
actors: "Speak the speech ... trippingly on the
tongue.

"The opportunity to contribute their own energy,
