ner, did his stint along 14 Mile near
Ryan Road in Sterling Heights. He
was nominated by his daughter,
Debbie, a Wayne State University
student, who was on hand with the
rest of his family and friends, as well
as co-workers at St. John Oakland
Hospital, Madison Heights.
"Running with the flame gave me
a real rush," he said.
"It's great to know that, for two-
tenths of a mile, you're the only per-
son in the world carrying that
Olympic torch.
"And there were many heart-
wrenching stories among the other
torchbearers I met — paralyzed peo-

ple in wheelchairs, cancer survivors
and others. I was honored to be
there. People even wanted my auto-
graph."
Frank, the Perishes and Dr.
Schwartzenfeld all bought the torch
they carried as a souvenir, with the
money going to the Winter Olympic
Games fund. The relay, sponsored by
Chevrolet, was in Michigan at the
mid-point of a 13,500-mile, 65-day
event, involving 11,500 torchbearers
carrying the flame through 250 U.S.
cities in 46 states, leading up to the
start of the games in Salt Lake City
on Feb. 8. L
