Weintraub, is that of a priest who remains a priest but for whom it becomes important to understand what makes up his entire being and personality. The Emmy-award winning HBO movie Conspiracy is a dramatic reen- actment of the Wannsee Conference (a conference held in a villa outside Berlin) where the strategy for what was later called the "Final Solution" was set down. "It's a very well done, understated film with remarkable per- formances by Stanley Tucci (Adolf Eichmann) and Kenneth Branagh (SS Gen. Reinhard Heydrich)," says Weintraub. Argentinean Films Several films are Argentina-based or related. Of these, My Own Telenovela centers around a filmmaker living in Israel who returns to his native Argentina, which he left 22 years earli- er, to help his older sister in the care of ailing family members. Weintraub describes it as a very accessible film about a very likeable family in which you see the separation struggle of family members who are each pursuing their own dreams and interests and are so geographically far apart. The Argentinean American co pro- duction, To Live with Terror, steps behind the scenes of the unsolved bombings of the Israeli embassy in 1992 and the Jewish Community - - Center in Buenos Aires in 1994. Weintraub's personal favorite is Gripshok, a fictionalized feature film about a Berlin-based left-wing Jewish political journalist and his girlfriend who spend an idyllic summer in 1932 at Gripsholm Castle in Sweden. As events in Germany worsen, and the journalist is called a traitor in the press, the castle becomes a temporary refuge. Weintraub likes the film because it is visually stunning and. "tells a person- al story in the midst of huge historical forces. The most noticeable thing, in Weintraub's opinion, about the festival is that the films are very current — about things that weren't happening in the world 10, even five years ago. The Israeli feature Thank God for India about a 72-year-old man who leaves Israel to tour India, a country where many young Israelis come of age outside the structure of Israeli society, is a case in point. This wasn't such a big phenomenon 10 years ago when Israeli kids were going to Europe instead, says Weintraub. "What we try to do is give people a snapshot of what Jewish life is like around the world at several moments, including the present, the more recent past and the historical." Film has become one of the richest media for the exploration of Jewish identity, concludes Weintraub, who puts it on par with fine arts, literature and music.1-1 In Newberry Square 39470 W. 14 Mile Road (248) 960-9200 • Ribs • Chicken • Pizza • Carry out • Delivery • Catering u ***************************************************** $1 00 $1500 :Receive with your order of or more * * Off Carry Out Only With This Coupon ** * ** * * * **** * ** * * * * **** * * * * * * ***** * * * ** * ***** * * ** * THE GALLERY RESTAURANT Enjoy gracious dining amid a beautiful atmosphere of casual elegance 1► 1 p BREAKFAST LUNCH DINNER 4i 4 1 1/4 OPEN 7 DAYS: MON.- SAT. 7 a.m.- 9:30 p.m. SUN. 8 a.m.- 9 p.m. West Bloomfield Plaza • 6638 Telegraph Road and Maple • 248-851-0313 ITALIAN GRILL A LIVELY NEIGHBORHOOD BAR & GRILL WHERE LARGO'S TRADITIONAL MENU IS FEATURED ALONG WITH SANDWICHES, PIZZAS AND AN INNOVATIVE "PASTA GRILL" SECTION.
