My compliments on your excellent
coverage of the 75th anniversary of
the Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit ("75 Years
Strong," Jan. 4, page 24). I only regret
that with all the praise for its contri-
butions to our community, it is ironic
that there appears no solution to the
problem of access to the D. Dan and
Betty Kahn Building in West
Bloomfield for seniors and, particular-
ly, handicapped people.
I had hoped that in remodeling that
building, some consideration would
be given to moving handicapped park-
ing closer and providing a street
entrance that would remove the neces-
sity of the long walk from the present
parking area to the lobby, which is an
--impossible task for many of us.
I attended an Institute of Retired
Persons executive board meeting, of
which I am a member, and a represen-
tative of the JCC informed us that the
only new entrance planned was for
easier access to the health club. What
sense does it make to help those that
need it the least?
Would it be asking too much for
the JCC hierarchy to pay some atten-
tion to this matter and provide a
solution so that JCC can continue to
provide its excellent services to every-
one, including handicapped persons
and aged?

ADL Provides
Broad Reach
We'll help
you get all your
ducks in a row...
The Anti-Defamation League's
national office and the lay leadership
in the Michigan Region share your
interest in our hiring a permanent
regional director; we hope to fill this
position soon ("Vision At The ADL,"
Jan. 4, page 21).
As one of the nation's premier civil
rights agencies, the ADL is the crucial
leader in the fight to protect and pre-
serve our freedoms, expose our enemies
and be the watchful eye for the Jewish
community Here in Michigan, we are
presented with numerous challenges
and we remain vigilant in our efforts to
do our work. Yes, we have staffing con-
cerns at the moment; however, that has
not stopped us from pursuing our mis-
sion. Today, we continue to work with
law enforcement throughout the state,
monitor the activities of hate groups
based here in Michigan, respond to the
various complaint calls we receive, work
with campus Hillels and religious
schools to confront anti-Semitism, pro-
vide security expertise to Jewish com-
munal institutions, disseminate infor-
mation about and advocate for Israel,
work with and lobby legislators at all
levels, and support the fact finding and
research activities of the league nation-
wide.
Through our A World of Difference
Institute, we have trained more than
25,000 teachers throughout the state.
This award-winning program assists ele-
mentary and secondary school educa-
tors to confront prejudice, bigotry. and
discrimination in their classrooms,
while simultaneously teaching their stu-
dents to recognize and respect diversity.
During the past year in southeast
Michigan, we have worked with the
Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham,
Dearborn, Farmington, Rochester,
Southfield and West Bloomfield public
schools, to name a few. Outstate, we
maintain long-term relationships with
the school districts in West Ottawa,
Grand Blanc, Grand Rapids, Grand
Haven and Kentwood.
I encourage the "skeptics" to visit our
Web site, vvvvw.adlorg, to see the
unique and significant breadth and
width of the league's agenda and
involvement.
We recently moved our offices to the
Max M. Fisher Federation Building in
Bloomfield Township. We chose this
location in the hopes that our close
proximity to the established Jewish
community would make us more acces-
sible. We encourage all of our Jewish
agencies and institutions to seek us out,
utilize our materials and publications,
and ask for our expertise.

Give No Land
Back To Arabs
How is it that Jews, a notoriously
intelligent people, continually add up
two and two and get five?
According to an American Jewish
Committee Survey quoted by Rachel
Pomerance of the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency ("Limited Thumbs Up," Dec.
28, page 17), 73 percent of Jews sur-
veyed agree with the statement that
the goal of the Arabs is not the
return of the "occupied" territories,
but rather the destruction of Israel.
Despite this given, according to
the survey, the majority of
American Jews support the creation
of a Palestinian state and the dis-
mantling of some or all of the
"West Bank" settlements to reach a
peace deal with Arabs. David
Singer, director of research for the
American Jewish Committee, finds
that the majority of American Jews
have overcome the "psychological
obstacles necessary to reach a peace
agreement" — whatever that means
and what "peace deal" and with
whom? Why in the world would
you give up any territory, let alone
crucial territory or even a cup of
coffee, to a people whose repeatedly
declared goal is to destroy you and
you know it? Does it make sense to
give the crocodile first a good bite
on your leg so that he, has a leg-up,
so to speak, on his mission to
devour you? Does two and two
make five? I don't think so.

In regards to the problem facing the
Jewish War Veterans of the United
States of America Department of
Michigan Memorial Room in
Southfield ("Waiting For A Room,"
Dec. 21, page 29): It's about time
the community is asked to take an
interest and, hopefully, we will
come to bat and do what is neces-
sary to save our military heritage.
Bob Feldman, president of the JWV
Memorial Home, is doing a great job,
but there is more to the story.
Every year, we have a goodwill
luncheon with many gentile women in
attendance. Each one is brought into
the Memorial Room to see and hear
about our fallen Jewish young men.
Every year, there is a scholarship
presentation to Jewish and non-
Jewish students. What better way to
break the big lie that Jews did not
serve in the war?
The Ladies Auxiliary still does the
service work in Michigan and we
are admired for it. What is this
worth to the Jewish community of
Detroit? Please share this problem,
Jewish Detroiters.
