Professor Haim Harari, Weitzmann Institute president, joins Karen and
William Davidson at the dedication of the Davidson Institute for Science
Education at the Weitzmann Institute of Science.

Davidson Institute Dedicated In Israel

The campus of the Davidson Institute
of Science Education at the
Weitzmann Institute of Science was
dedicated in Rehovot, Israel. The new
institute, which aims to improve the
standard of science teaching in Israeli
schools, was made possible by
Bloomfield Hills philanthropist
William Davidson.
"This will concentrate in one place
the activities that have been spread
around the campus," said Professor
Haim Harari, Weitzmann Institute
president. "The concept is simple.
Science know-how is our most impor-
tant economic commodity and the best
investment for the future. This campus
would not have been possible without
the huge commitment from Bill
Davidson and many other donors."
Davidson, who received an honorary
doctor of philosophy degree for his
"manifold accomplishments in
American and international industry
and commerce," spoke of three things
that have always had a mystique for
Americans: the State of Israel,
Jerusalem and the Weitzmann Institute
of Science.
"It gives me great emotional pleasure
to come to the Weitzmann Institute,
and the last few days in which I have
received an honorary doctorate have
had a profound effect on me," said
Davidson. The Weitzmann Institute
takes us one step closer to God.
"It is not by accident that I am here.
My grandfather attended the second

Zionist congress and purchased land in
Israel in the 1920s in Jerusalem, which
he later donated to Hadassah for the
construction of a hospital on Mount
Scopus. My mother had Henrietta
Szold as a guest in our house in
Michigan.
"My secret weapon has always been a
positive attitude," he continued. It is
the cornerstone of my life. If some-
thing is great, find out why it is great.
That is what the Weitzmann does. It
takes apart and analyzes things that
work."
Karen Davidson, his wife, dedicated
the new education campus gardens
which are named for her. "I cannot
think of a more appropriate gift," she
said. "There is nothing I like more
than digging around. The tradition of
giving that Bill has received from- his
parents and grandparents is one of the
things that has most impressed me
about the Davidson family"
Professor Avraham Arcavi, head of
the Davidson Institute, said the new
campus "will create scientifically
grounded curricular programs for
schools, perform in-service training for
science teachers and will conduct
research on what students and teachers
know about science." It also will house
the Israeli headquarters of Perach, a
program started 27 years ago at the
Wetizmann Institute in which 28,000
college students have their tuition fees
paid in return for tutoring disadvan-
taged children.
