TAKING
ORDERS

•

Jewish students from Berkeley,
Calif, to Princeton, N.J., and from
Halifax to Vancouver need, and
deserve, support from local communi-
ties and nationalleadership, across the
spectrum of organizations. Most
Jewish faculty, some very well known
in their disciplines, are silent or stu-
diously neutral, and they are also often
victims of the brainwashing that has
swept the campuses and media.
In addition, Israeli academics visit-
ing these campuses for short periods,
or with longer-term research or faculty
positions, need to be seen and heard,
in order to offset the steady impact of
Arab propaganda.
A new citizen diplomacy initiative, led
by Israeli Interior Minister and Soviet
emigre Natan Sharansky, is helping to
prepare Israelis from different professions
and with a variety of perspectives for
public presentations abroad.
An effective offensive to restore some
balance requires a long-term program
and persistent cooperation between
students, faculty and community lead-
ers. The results will be felt in the
media and among government offi-
cials, who often take their cues from
the Arabist academic establishment.
If we can take back the campuses, we
can begin to turn the tide in this war in
the media and on other fronts. Fl

workers to look for the missing key.
No luck. We took the duplicate to
locksmiths, who told us they couldn't
make that kind of key — they did not
have the right kind of blank to work
with. They sent us to a specialty lock-
smith who made a key, but it didn't
work. We worried. What would hap-
pen if we lost our last key?
Then, the first night of Chanukah
came. We all lit candles at home and
thought about miracles. The next
morning, the phone rang. It was Linda
Masters, the manager of the Medical
Society building. She said the repair-
man_ from the Detroit Elevator Co. had
just come racing up the stairs with a
- gold key in his hand. He said he found
it in the middle of the elevator shaft
when he sent the elevator up. "Is it
yours?" he asked. "No," she answered,
"but I know where it belongs."
And so, on the seventh night of
Chanukah, the key was slipped back
into the lock in the ark. It worked per-
fectly. It had been three months since
it had disappeared. It was a beautiful
sight — the light from the candles
reflecting on the gold key and the
carved wood. It was a miracle. 17
