wine section.
Customers had to walk through
this barrel, lined on each side with
fine wines, to get from one part of
the store to the other.
Another clever touch in the dining
room was a huge wagon wheel
mounted horizontally and converted
into a large table.
ALMOST AS AMERICAN as
apple pie was its name ... but the
Welcomer Inn on North Main Street
in RoChester, was all four-star French
cuisine ... Its chef was Marie Bertin,
and her husband, Michel Bertin, was
its manager ... They were the former
owners of Le Bordeaux Restaurant
on Livernois.
YOU GOT THAT "Gadsby" feel-
ing at the Bijou on Southfield in
Southfield ... It was a jewel of a
place ... At least that is what it
means in French ... Bijou was an ele-
gant 1920s style restaurant resplen-
dent in art nouveau ... Waitresses in
long skirts provided everything from
formal French service to preparing
Spanish coffee at your table ... The
Bijou was luxurious ... and patterned
like a theatrical theme ... with appe-
tizers called "Selected Shorts" ... The
"Main Features" being its entrees ...
and desserts called "The Finale" ...
Extra "Added Attractions" were
Bijou's soups, potatoes, vegetables
and salads.
PRONOUNCED LIKE A sneeze
by natives, Cadieux Cafe in Detroit
near Grosse Pointe was one of those
places that people like world traveler
George Perriot took people like Lowell
Thomas to because Belgians once
raced pigeons there ... and still bowled
with strange-shaped balls in the base-
ment ... It was a shirr-sleeve place,
more or less turned toward its own
neighborhood, where mussels and
mussel soup were on the menu along
with other unexpected delicacies.
PRIME RIBS and good California
wine were "The Thing" at Victoria
Station on Northwestern Highway,
south of 12 Mile ... Great hamburgers
also at lunch ... The theme was rail-
road with a capital "RR" ... A waiting
room replica served as a barroom that
took on a club-like atmosphere in
peak hours ... Decorations and furni-
ture were railroad artifacts ... Folks
loved its terrific Baggage Cart salad
bar that was included with dinner ...
as they ate with privacy in renovated
box cars and a caboose. I
