ONG H04 FINE CHINESE DINING c eNuttites Taw 'to 'A wonderful adventure in fine dining" — Danny Raskin A Worldwide Project Rolnik, who enlisted public and pri- vate organizations to promote the com- petition, wanted to bring Israel to the attention of people around the world from a cultural and educational point of view Interest in the project, often spread through Israeli ambassadors, reached schools and agencies serving youths ages 8-16. "The message went from country-to- country, from city-to-city, from school- to-school and from family-to-family," Rolnik says. In each country where paintings were completed, a team of professionals was assigned to do the judging. The main requirement was that the paintings be original. Although nearly 50 finalists were brought to Israel in 1999 for the final round of competition, the judges decid- ed that the quality was such that they couldn't eliminate any of the contestants. "Far Eastern and former communist countries had the largest representation," Rolnik says. "We failed to get large numbers of participants in the United States because we couldn't bring religious projects to the public schools." Although West Bloomfield is the exhibit's first stop in North America under the direction of Infomedia Judaica, other original paintings are to make the rounds of art centers in various countries. The first traveling exhibit was initiated at the end of 2000, when the Bible Museum in Amsterdam displayed illustrations. Also making the rounds is a namesake book (MallMedia; $49), which comple- ments the exhibit and opens the artistry to those unable to attend. The album has 300 illustrations categorized into chapters according to the most popular subjects chosen by the children: Genesis; Forefathers; Moses, the Faithful Shepherd; Judges and Kings; Prophets and Outstanding Figures; and Jerusalem. Each section of the book begins with relevant portions of the Bible expressed in English and Hebrew. The next edition will include the titles of the illustrations. "We want to extend this project as a come in during regular gallery hours to use them," explains Sylvia Nelson, gallery director. "During the last week of the exhibit, the illustrations will be judged by Janet Torno, executive director of the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center. She will pick four winners." Illustrations will be divided into two categories according to age: 5-8 and 9- 12. Two finalists will be chosen from new way of studying the Bible," Rolnik says. "We intend to have interactive CD-ROMs with 1,000 of the illustra- tions in 17 languages. There also will be posters, greeting cards and Hagaddahs. " While the exhibit is in West Bloomfield, there will be a companion show created as local youngsters make their own biblical illustrations, which ultimately will be juried for prizes. While each award winner who made it to Israel received a menorah, the others received certificates that trees were being planted in their names by the Jewish National Fund (JNF). The trees are being planted at the Bible Forest, which is near the city of Beit Shemesh, in the south of Israel, and money for additional trees is being solicited. The forest will surround a per- manent exhibit area for the children's art and will offer story readings to visitors. Itzhak Efron, former JNF education director and now a consultant for the organization, is promoting interest in the site. "We were very impressed with the attitudes shown by the children and the way they grasped the subjects," Efron says. "Soon, we will be approaching people around the world to add to the forest."❑ We Cater To Private Parties 27925 Orchard Lake Road, north of 12 Mile • Farmington Hills 248.489.2280 TribeC a full service catering company. superbowl solution #3: book y our party 6,9 January 2.5tk receive 1 0% off. j ust one more concept in creative catering. eric samson & greg rerer 2+8.909-5767/ 2+8.590.5+35 www.TribeCaCatering.com Children of the World Illustrate the Bible runs Jan. 6-Feb. 28 at the Janice Charach Epstein Gallery in the West Bloomfield Jewish Community Center.
