Sisterhood Books
Aid Children
Beth Shalom Serves
All Age Groups
The Congregation Beth Shalom
Sisterhood collects books for Orchards
Children's Services.
In the last four months, the sister-
hood has collected 450 books for the
children served by the Southfield social
service agency. Every Wednesday and
Thursday, sisterhood volunteers read to
the children, many of whom do not
know how to read. The program
includes one-on-one reading sessions
with children at Orchards Children's
Services.
Peggy Jackson, a Beth Shalom
Sisterhood member, initiated the litera
cy program to honor the late Gerald
Levin, Orchards' former president.
Jackson's son benefited from an
Orchards' program.
"The kids are elated about the litera-
cy program," said Jackson. "Every time
we donate books, the children leave
clutching them."
Lois Gerenraich, director of corpo-
rate and community relations at
Orchards, agrees. "The children love the
attention and praise the program."
Gerenraich said. "They look forward to
story time every week."
Congregation Beth Shalom Shabbat ser-
vices are tailored to the needs of differ-
ent ages.
Tot Shabbat and the Family Service
are held monthly on the second Shabbat
of the month. Hebrew school services
are held two weeks later.
Tot Shabbat is for children 2 1/2-6
and includes creative movement and
music. Led by Cantor Samuel
Greenbaum and Lainie Phillips, family
life educator, the program is held in the
synagogue's pre-school room, from 10-
10:45 a.m.
The Family Service is geared for older
children and is held in the chapel. In
addition to the prayer service, there is an
educational component appropriate to
the age group. Parents are invited to join
their children in the 11 a.m. service.
The Tot Shabbat and Family services
will be Jan. 12, March 9, April 13, May
11 and June 8.
Children bar/bat mitzvah age or older
and parents or grandparents are wel-
come in the main sanctuary beginning
at 9 a.m. Babysitting is available during
all Shabbat and High Holiday services,
beginning at 10 a.m.
Parents are welcome to bring new-
born children. All services are followed
by a congregational kiddush and a can-
tor's tisch for the children
