Empty Bowls
Fight Hunger
The Food Bank of Oakland County
and Yad Ezra, the Oak Park-based
kosher food pantry, will join forces for
the second year to help fight hunger
with an Empty Bowls Open House 1-3
p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, at the Jewish
Community Center in West
Bloomfield.
Families can donate $18 (per family)
for a hand-made bowl and a simple
meal of soup and bread. The purpose of
the Empty Bowls Dinner is to raise
awareness about hunger and to raise
money to buy nutritious food for those
in need in metro Detroit.
The Bingham Farms-based Unique
Restaurant Corp. will donate all the
soup and bread for the event. The
Third New Hope Baptist Church
Choir and Temple Israel's Shir Ami
Volunteer Choir will entertain guests.
Younger children can enjoy the story-
telling corner or visit the "Planting
Table." They will be able to plant seeds
(vegetable or flower) to take home and
create their own windowsill garden.
Master gardeners will be on hand to
assist children with the planting and to
answer any questions.
The Empty Bowls programs mission
is to ease hunger and poverty by secur-
ing, storing and distributing food,
information, personal care items and
household products to a network of
emergency food pantries, soup kitchens
and shelters in Oakland County.
In 1991, the Food Bank of Oakland
County distributed 1.4 million pounds
of food. By 1995, the figure was 3.1
million pounds. By year's end, the Food
Bank — in one of the wealthiest coun-
ties in the United States — will have
distributed more than 6.3 million
pounds of food.
