She lists the popularity of some of
the cultural activities sponsored by the
JCC: 8,000 people attended the
Lenore Marwil Jewish Film Festival
this year; 15,000 came to this year's
annual Jewish Book Fair; 640 adults
enrolled in last winter's Seminars for
Adult Jewish Enrichment (SAJE).
One thousand kids went to the
summer camp, making it the largest
Jewish day camp at a Jewish center in
the country,” she adds.
Says past executive director Morton
Plotnick, "The JCC has always
brought to the center of our commu-
nity issues that are important — now,
sports and fitness is an important part
of peoples' live."
He adds that this duo has brought
many people into the Jewish system.
The JCC has used athletic's as a pri-
mary vehicle to bring the process of
Jewish identification to a variety of
Jews.
He adds that the Center's great
capacity is its ability to evolve into
what the Jewish community needs in
the future. Recently, he says, childcare
and special needs — like day camps
for sports or theater — have con-
sumed greater and greater space, as the
Center responds to the community's
desires.
"The Center," says Bloom, "will also
have an entire new gym and facilities
in the next few years. In addition, the
social service and cultural education-
type programs are being renovated to
fit the times ... and with Rabbi Hal
Greenwald on staff, we're bringing
Judaism into every corner of the
Center.
"But one thing hasn't changed," he
says. "The Center is the center of the
community."
The activities comprising the year-
long celebration that started last June,
reflect the range of people the Center
serves, says Hart.
"We've finished half of the events,
says Bloom, referring to the
Kletzmatics concert at Orchestra Hall
in October and the December open
house at the Northwest Activities
Center, the former JCC on Meyers
and Curtis.
Still to come:
• March 19, 2002: The JCC will
host a panel discussion on its role in
the history of Jewish Detroit. Panelists
include Irwin Shaw, past JCC execu-
tive director, Melba Winer and U.S.
District Judge Avern Cohn. JCC
board member Debbie Levin will chair
the panel and David Gad-Harf, execu-
