Jerusalern/JTA — Israel agreed to
ease restrictions on Palestinians ahead
of a U.S. envoy's return to the
region.
The measures were to include
removing Israeli roadblocks and
curbs on travel between Palestinian
towns and cities. Israeli Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon was respond-
ing to an American request to ease
the restrictions ahead of U.S. envoy
Anthony Zinni's scheduled arrival.
During his four-day trip, Zinni is
expected to call on Israeli and
Palestinian leaders to begin imple-
menting plans aimed at ending ten-
sions and restarting peace talks. Israel
continues to insist that there be
seven days of quiet before it will
implement the plans.

condemned violence in the Middle
East.
In his new year's - message, the pope
called on Muslims, Christians and
Jews to seek peace. "The cry of blood
calls to God from that land, the
blood of brothers spilt by brothers,
all sons of the same Patriarch
Abraham, sons, as are all men, of the
same Holy Father," he said.
The pope said the Sept. 11 terror
attacks on the United States and
their aftermath had shaken the
world. "Perverse interests" threaten
to turn the world _into a "theater of
war," he said.

New York/JTA — The National
Yiddish Book Center will publish
monthly guides for Jewish books
starting in January.
The Amherst, Mass., museum's
free guides will feature a different lit-
erary work each month and provide
essays, study questions and inter-
views with the author. The first book
is Michael Chabon's "The Amazing
Adventures of Kavalier and Clay."

Israel Deports
Foreign Workers

Jerusalem/JTA — Israel launched a
campaign to expel illegal foreign
workers.
Special teams of police and inspec-
tors are reportedly aiming to deport
1,000 to 3,000 illegal foreign work-
ers a month. The minister of labor
and social welfare, Shlomo Benizri,-*
also announced a freeze on new visas
to foreign workers. An estimated
150,000 foreign workers are in Israel
illegally. Civil rights organizations
protested the new policy, and a rep-
resentative for the builders associa-
tion called the moves harmful to
construction.

Torah Scroll
Returns Home

New York/JTA — A Torah scroll
stolen from a Brooklyn synagogue
was recovered.
The scroll, estimated to be worth
tens of thousands of dollars, was
recovered by police from . an apart-
ment in the area. The homeless man
believed to have carried out the rob-
bery of Congregation Netivot Israel
earlier this month was arrested.
