expressive of one person," explains Kleid, who earns his living as a graphics designer and has planned ads appearing in the New York Times, Variety and other publications. Since moving to New York in 1999, Kleid also has tried writing for theater and acting. He appeared in Creative Therapy, based on a comic book story he penned. "A lot of my writing explores psychological issues," says Kleid, whose family belongs to Young Israel of Oak Park. Religious Diversity Messier and Farb met at Temple Beth El in Flint, found they shared a belief in pluralistic Judaism as well as an interest in comics and teamed up. Their continuing project, 4 Corners, gets its title from the four Judaic disci- plines they want to explore — Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and what they have grouped together as Nontraditional. "We started doing this as a project to educate people about the different branches of Judaism," says Messier, who does the artwork. "We have written about holidays and specific topics such as tying tefillin." Both Messier and Farb use the cartoons for their. teaching at Flint's Ivriah Sunday school, which includes chil- dren from the Conservative Beth Israel and the Reform Temple Beth El. Farb was groomed in pluralism while living in Louisville, Ky., where Jews regularly visit various synagogues. The two men spend a lot of time talking about story ideas and take about three hours for drawing and adding text for each strip. Messier started drawing cartoons in the 1980s for a professional organiza- tion. Farb has tried his hand at writing children's books. We'd like to give people a greater appreciation of differ- ent religious points of view," Farb says. — Suzanne Chessler - 4 Join us for an evening filled with romance and intimacy for two or casual sophistication and \N 0 a elegance for a small group Four Aiv Course Dinner! 4 04 f.
