Spirituality Spreading The Word Chabad high school students teach Chanukah lessons. SHELLI LIEBMAN DORFMAN Staff Writer F rom a caravan of 80 cars affixed with glowing elec- tric menorahs to a nightly rooftop Chanukah candle lighting to a holiday display in the West Bloomfield Jewish Community Center, the boys of Chabad Student Outreach spread the message of Chanukah in a big way. "The students make all the arrangements," Chezkel Deren, 18, of Stanford, Conn., says of teens from the Oak Park-based Cheder Lubavitch and Yeshivas Lubavitch, where he is a senior. "Some of them organize the cars in the parade that are also driven around town every day during Chanukah, with menorahs on top of them. Others run the Chanukah mobiles, parking them near different shopping centers so people can, come inside for Chanukah literatures and free menorahs," he said. Friday afternoon visits to wish a Shabbat Shalom to local businesses have come to include Chanukah dis- cussions during the holiday. Dennis Chaiken's Direct Optical in Farmington Hills hosted a Chanukah party planned by the group Dec. 14. And for those unable to make it to any of the planned events, five menorah-laden minivans cruised the streets, playing Chanukah tunes through loud speakers fastened to their roofs. -7 PHOTOS BY JOSHUA KRISTAL Clockwise from top left.
