he Anti-Defamation League has
been looking to fill the position
of Michigan Region director
since Donald Cohen left a year ago.
According to ADL's director of
regional operations Ann Tourk, the
organization is "optimistic."
"We are looking for a strong profes-
sional leader, someone who under-
stands the ADL and its mission, who
understands the community and the
issues that are of importance," she said.
The perception of "Jewish power," the
separation of church and state, and the
treatment of Israel are the most impor-
tant issues, both nationally
and locally, she said.
The lack of a permanent
director in the Michigan
office has not hampered its
effectiveness, she said.
Tourk commended Fran
Richard
Gross as interim director,
Nodel
but said, "Clearly, if we had
a director and we were able
to develop the staff the way we intended
to do, there's more that we could have
done. But we feel that we have held our
own and maintained our own and cer-
tainly been out there when there have
been issues that are core to our mission."
Gross said most incident calls —
dealing with employment issues or
vandalism — were handled by the
Detroit office without problem. Three
more complicated incidents, dealing
with attorneys, serious discussions and
negotiations, were handled through
the Chicago ADL office. "I'll be happy
when the position is filled. It's a great
office, our community is great and
there isn't any reason why we shouldn't
have a great director," Gross said.
Richard Nodel, Michigan Region presi-
dent, said the national office hired a head-
hunter some months ago to help find a
qualified candidates, but the position has
been hard to fill for a couple of reasons.
"ADL is comparable to other non-
profits, but it hasn't been able to compere
with the salaries offered in private indus-
tries, particularly in the dotcoms," he
said. "Then typically, a director is a fami-
ly person, and it's not that easy to get
someone to move with their family to
Detroit. As much as we love it, Detroit's
not the garden spot of America."
