Mitzvah Day benefits not only the
more than 35 agencies that receive
volunteer help, Maisels said; it also
benefits Federation itself. The event

In Redford, eight volunteers wearing
their most comfortable clothes painted
the kitchen and dining room of a
home for adults with developmental
disabilities run by Lutheran Social
Services of Michigan.
Since resident Abe Szlamkiwicz,
who works at Taco Bell, is Jewish,
while his friend Walter Starks, who
works at a Burger King, is Christian,
the home is decorated with
both a menorah and
Christmas bunting.
Federation volunteers had
painted the home's bed-
rooms last year. The kitchen
was in worse shape. "The
plaster was coming off; then
there was water damage,"
said volunteer Dan Kaufman
of Sterling Heights, a civil
engineer. Added Ruth
Zendel of Rochester Hills,
"We had to scrape and put
spackling down before we
could paint."
Kaufman, a Mitzvah Day volunteer
for the past five years, said the event
gives him the feeling of "making a dif-
ference."
"Someone has to make a difference
in this life. Otherwise we're all alone,"
he said.
