"Calling Hospice was my
decision. I was reluctant, and
perhaps should have called
sooner, but you just don't want
to acknowledge what that
means. The staff was
professional and perceptive
and sensitive to our needs."
Young Israel
Shul Closes
A "For Sale"
West Bloomfield
sign appeared on the yard of Young
Israel of West Bloomfield last
March, a signal that the synagogue
would eventually close.
Though no officer from the syna-
gogue was available, Issac Katz,
president of Young Israel of Oak
Park, confirmed that the building
had been sold. Most of the money
was used to retire debts, he said; the
rest went back to the National
Council of Young Israel in New
York.
"The Young Israel of West
Bloomfield closed because there
were not enough members who live
within walking distance of the syna-
gogue to hold a minyan," Katz said.
The 1,700-square-foot converted
home on two acres along Maple,
west of Farmington Road, had been
home to Young Israel of West
Bloomfield since early 1997.
For eight years before buying the
former house, the 12-year-old con-
gregation met in member homes,
office buildings and a storefront, all
in the same general area.

New York/JTA — President Clinton
helped the Jewish National Fund
raise some $1.75 million.
The money will be used to help
build a reservoir in the Negev
Desert. The JNF centenary dinner,
held Dec. 12 in London for more
than 1,500 people, is believed to be
the largest kosher event ever held in
Britain.
Law Bars Pardon
For Rabin Assassin
Tel Aviv/JTA — The Knesset
approved a law preventing Israel's
president from pardoning anyone
who murders a prime minister.
The legislation is known as the
"Amir law," after Yigal Amir, who
assassinated Prime Minister Yitzhak
Rabin in 1995. The law, which was
made retroactive to include Amir,
was passed Wednesday by a vote of
62 in favor, six against and eight
abstentions.
