A glowing nomination by her son,
Allen, of Lansing, made Gretl Frank's
selection almost a certainty.
She spends most of her time visiting,
nursing home residents, reading to ele-
mentary school students in the
Ferndale School District, packaging
food for the needy at the Oak Park-
based kosher food pantry Yad Ezra,
distributing holiday bundles for the
Southfield Goodfellows, swimming
laps at a local swimming pool, playing
bridge and e-mailing relatives and
friends.
"She's a true inspiration to the entire
family," said Allen.
In addition to all of that, she works
on weekends doing market research at
the Gibraltar Trade Center in Taylor
— still driving her own car.
"Of course, I'm going to walk the
two-tenths of a mile . . . running is
not for me," said Frank, known as
0 ma to her family (German for
grandmother). "We have a close-knit
family and my two sons and four
grandchildren are coming in from
parts of California and Michigan just
to see me carry that torch. Even my 6-
month-old great-grandson will be
there."
Born in Germany, Gretl and her
family fled the Nazis in 1936 when
she was 23, eventually settling in
Michigan. She worked in a depart-
ment store, then as a supervisor at the
old Jewish Children's Home before
getting married. Her husband, Jack,
passed away after they were married
for 44 years.
"I like to keep busy, so I'm glad my
son nominated me. Even though I'm
not a runner, I hope to turn this into
a wonderful experience for the entire
family."

Family Affair

Bob Perish will run the two-tenths of
a mile, but his wife, Bedonna, will
walk. They were nominated by their
daughter, Meredith, who also will par-
ticipate Dec. 22 in Washington, D.C.
She's an avid runner and former Peace
Corps member who was a volunteer
during the Olympics in Atlanta.
The Perishes are retired after he
worked at Rouge Steel in Dearborn
for 33 years and she spent the same
number of years as a middle school
teacher in Oak Park. He now works
part time at the Farmington Hills
YMCA, and she is a vice president of
the National Council of Jewish
Women. They both volunteer for the
Special Olympics each year, and they
help prepare the floats for Detroit's
Thanksgiving Day Parade.
"Meredith and I are used to running
marathons, but this is a new experi-
ence for Bedonna," said Perish. "We're
all really looking forward to carrying
the Olympic torch."
In addition to torchbearers, the
Olympic Torch Relay will move the
flame by airplane, train, ship, dog
sled, skis, horse-drawn sleigh, snow-
mobile, ice skaters, Chevy cars and
trucks and other modes of transporta-
tion. It'll be a logistical challenge get-
ting the flame to Salt Lake City,
involving 50 vehicles for advance
operations, torchbearer shuttles, stage
production trucks and support equip-
ment.
The only states not participating are
Minnesota, North and South Dakota
and Hawaii.
