Once inside, you found a cozy, com- fortable, carpeted lounge replete with intimate atmosphere and piano bar ... The menu had been reduced to the irre- ducible minimum ... In fact, Tadian's didn't even have one. But the food, what they had of it, brought customers back again and again ... The best thing and most popular was its club steak sandwich ... about seven ounces of prime sir- loin beef served on Armenian bread ... Next was a Tadian Special ... a wedge-shaped half pound of ground steer beef, sizzled up on a wedge of Armenian bread ... It was a good hamburger sandwich ... The only other thing it sold was a convention- al hamburger on a sesame seed bun. All these goodies came from a kitchen not much bigger than a good-sized coat closet. ANY RESEMBLANCE between the Knife and Fork Club on Howard in Detroit and the locker room at Briggs Stadium and Olympia was purely intentional ... the place abounded with stars of the Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons and here and there were seen some of the stars of the college world. The patronage of these athletes was constantly wooed by Knife and Fork owner, Jim Cornelius. Its menu listed such luncheon spe- •cials as the Jack Adams, the Sid Abel, the Buddy Parker, the Jimmie Dykes, etc. ... These were usually hearty things like corned beef sand- wiches with Swiss cheese, or jumbo- sized hamburgers. As might be expected, the dinner menu leaned heavily to beef in all forms ... Big, thick, juicy steaks in all price ranges were a specialty, as was roast beef. But the restaurant also served stuffed breast of pheasant with wild rice, orange burgundy sauce and wine jelly, as well ... and for many, it topped similar dishes they had ordered in French-type restaurants specializing in such food. THERE WAS NO REASON why you would have gone to the Belmont Lounge, on Woodward, for dinner in the first place ... From the exterior, it looked like any of a thousand neighborhood bars around Detroit ... Even the interior of the Belmont was undistinguished in appearance. •
