French effects ... La Fontaine and
La Rotisserie ... were big favorites
of folks dining out on the town.
La Fontaine, in the Renaissance
Center, offered that touch of snob
appeal for those who enjoyed the
thought of dining in an "authentic"
French restaurant ... From the
haughtily prim maitre d' to the stiff
service, that certain elan was estab-
lished ... The decor was somewhat
flashy, but basically clean and con-
temporary ... La Fontaine was defi-
nitely a dress-up place with little

regard for pocketbooks .. Tables
were served by teams and one or
the other team members was always

close at hand ready to respond to
even a lifted eyebrow.
LA ROTISSERIE in the Hyatt
Regency, Dearborn, was an elegant
room made even more chic by a
young lady who played the harp
and would, if asked, haul the harp
over to your table and sing for you
... Service came in teams and was as
well turned out as the room itself ...
and if you liked that sort of excite-
ment, they would cook at the table
with blue flames all around ...
There were even offerings of "La
Nouvelle Cuisine" ... low calories,
low cholesterol, but still scrump-
tious and fancy Continental
delights
You could live like the
hero of a classic Hollywood epic ...
for one meal at least.
MANY GOOD THINGS could
be said about Tadian's cocktail
lounge and grill ... not the least of
which was, if you didn't like the
cooking, you could always do it
yourself.
A wedge-shaped lot on W.
McNichols around Second or Third
was bought, and on it was built a
wedge-shaped building ... The effect
was interesting, but because the
