and models her approach with
young people after Bistritzky's. She
works only with young people who
want to play, and incorporates
orchestral music into the lessons.
"The last time I actually saw Mr.
Bistritzky was in 1968, but I called
him in 1991 and was excited that he
remembered me," Fogel says.
Other Jewish musicians appearing
in the concert include Isador Saslav
('55), who has been concertmaster
for orchestras in Buffalo and
Baltimore; Judy Letvin Leibman
('70), who plays flute at area events;
and Terri Feldman Fischer ('70) and
Sol Forman ('60), whose instrumen-
tal interests serve as an avocation.
"I remember taking a bus every
Saturday morning to perform with
the All-City Band," recalls Leibman,
of Farmington Hills, whose mother,
Esther Letvin, studied violin with
Bistritzky. "I found that Mr.
Bistritzky had great knowledge.
Although I went on to get a degree
in vocational rehabilitation, I loved
the appreciation for music he helped
me gain.
Instilling a love for music also was
part of family activities, says son
Boris Mishel of Medina, Wash., who
became an engineer but still tries his
hand at the piano, and niece Isabelle
Ziegelman of Franklin, who has per-
formed and taught piano.
Ziegelman remembers her uncle
enjoying family gatherings to cele-
brate Jewish holidays although he
did not practice religion himself.
My father made sure his students
performed all the great and beautiful
music," Mishel says. "He loved his
profession and taught me violin. He
didn't want to retire because he
loved his teaching and arranging. He

said it beat playing shuffleboard in
Miami."
Bistritzky, who taught four genera-
tions of music students, also will be
celebrated by returning alumni
David Cerone, president of the
Cleveland Institute of Music; Cathy
Compton, violist with the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra; Nancy
Wilson, performance violinist and
violin professor at Mannes College
in New York; and Karen Buranskas,
cello professor at Notre Dame
University.
Melissa White, the 2001 junior
division winner of the Texko-
Sphinx Competition, also will be
featured.
Robert Luby, a former Detroit
principal now development associate
for special projects at Interlochen
Center for the Arts, observed both
his children as they studied with
Bistritzky, often called "Mr. B."
Richard Luby became a professor
of violin at the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill. Ellen Luby
('65) went on to teach violin at
Cranbrook and Interlochen and will
play for the memorial concert.
"Misha Bistritzky was a magnifi-
cent teacher, and I think both my
children benefited by working with
him," Luby says. "I look forward to
being part of the audience for the
concert."
