President Sends
Holiday Message

Washington/JTA — President Bush
sent Chanukah greetings to the Jewish
community.
Bush called the eight-day festival,
which began Sunday night, a "holiday
of hope that encourages trust in God."
The president asked that the candles
of Chanukah illuminate the memory
of those who died in the terrorist
attacks on Sept. 11.
Chanukah "celebrates the liberation
of the ancient kingdom of Israel from
foreign occupation," he said in a state-
ment. "It teaches us that freedom
must sometimes be fought for a mes-
sage that continues to resonate today."

Wolfowitz Lights
National Menorah

Washington/JTA — U.S. Deputy
Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz
lit the national Chanukah menorah.
Hundreds attended Sunday's event,
sponsored by American Friends of
Lubavitch.
The menorah, which stands on the
Ellipse in front of the White House,
has been lit for the past 22 years.
Lubavitch sponsored similar cere-
monies in numerous cities around the
world, including New York, Jerusalem,
Paris, London and Moscow.

Menorah Lit
At Ground Zero

New York/JTA
A menorah was lit
at the site of the World Trade Center
attack. Laura Lehrfeld, who is 18
months old and lost her father when
the twin towers collapsed, lit the
menorah's first candle Sunday night.

Tel Aviv Towers
Display Flag

Tel Aviv/JTA — Tel Aviv's Azrieli
Towers are lit up in the shape of a
huge Israeli flag for a month-long
patriotism campaign.
The 44-floor square-shaped tower,
one of Tel Aviv's tallest, is lit up with
24,000 light bulbs in the shape of the
blue-and-white flag. The Azrieli
Group is also giving away flags and
stickers in an effort to generate a
countrywide wave of patriotism.
