Washington/JTA — The U.S. Supreme
Court refused to address the issue of
prayer at high school graduations. The
high court on Monday declined to take
a case that asserted that student-led
prayers at public high school gradua-
tions violate church-state separation.
Officials in Duval County, Fla., per-
mit prayers at graduation ceremonies
if students have already agreed in a
referendum to have prayers. The poli-
cy is in effect in Florida, Georgia and
Alabama. Observers say it is unlikely
that many other school districts
would want to adopt such a policy,
which gives students a platform to
speak without school control.

Columbus/JTA — Ohio can be sued,
for cutting the beard of a Jewish
inmate, the U.S. Supreme Court
ruled.
The high court refused Monday to
block the lawsuit brought by an
inmate who became a Chasidic Jew
after being imprisoned for the murder
of an 8-year-old girl. Citing his First
Amendment right to follow his reli-
gious beliefs, Hbrandon Lee Flagner
brought the lawsuit after prison offi-
cials twice cut his beard and sidelocks.
